Melatonin is an endogenous metabolite that plays an essential role in the organism's biorhythm.
The biological inner clock, the normal alternation of sleeping and waking, is often disrupted today, e.g. B. through long-distance travel, stress and shift work, but also as a result of the aging process. A healthy sleep is particularly important for the diverse tasks of renewal and recovery that our organism has to fulfill during the periods of sleep. The production of melatonin (in the pineal gland) in humans reaches its highest level between the ages of 1 and 6 years; after that, the body's own production of melatonin decreases. 45-year-olds only have half as much melatonin as children, 80-year-olds only a quarter. Melatonin is usually offered in dosages between 1 and 5 mg per tablet or capsule. The recommended nutritional dosage is 1-2 mg/day, as needed, half an hour before bedtime. One should only use melatonin before going to bed. Air travelers on long-haul flights appreciate melatonin as a remedy against the exhaustion caused by the time difference, the so-called jet lag. It is best to take 1 - 2 tablets before going to sleep 2 - 3 days before the start of the flight and then after arrival take another 1 - 2 tablets before the desired bedtime.
